Background:

Alex Barrett was born on June 25th, 1984. From a young age he exhibited a keen interest in the visual arts, nurtured by family trips to Italy where he immersed himself in the art of the Renaissance painters and sculptors. However, it wasn't long before he found his true passion: cinema.

While completing his school education, Alex attended two Raindance Masterclasses, before going on to study Film and Video at Surrey Institute of Art & Design (graduating in 2005 with a BA (Hons)). At the end of his first year, he embarked on a personal project known as ‘Borders&Boundaries’. Mixing striking visuals with a philosophical voiceover, the film initiated the style that Alex subsequently developed further in his next film, ‘Answers’. He then moved on to explore the film-making medium itself with the film ‘Is This A Question? Is This An Answer?' (which enjoyed successful screenings at the Sutton Film Festival 2005, the 2006 Tromanale Festival, and the 16th International Videofestival Bochum). During his final year, Alex also served as editor on the short film ‘Tuesday’, selected for screening at Manchester's International Kinofilm Festival 2006.

Since graduating, Alex has achieved a number of further successes. In December 2005 his ten five-second films, collectively known as ‘The Lion's Head’, were short-listed for the Cobra Vision Film Competition. In the same year, Alex co-founded the production company Tiga Kali Studio, and he has since gone on to write and direct a number of personal and commissioned projects with the company, notably the award-winning and multiple festival-screened film ‘Great & Small’ (Winner Best Short Form Furzedown Film Festival 2008, Runner Up Insight Film Festival 2007, Anonimul International Independent Film Festival 2007, Busho Short Film Festival 2007, Wimbledon Shorts 2008, Wood Green International Short Film Festival 2008 and touring programme of Cannes in a Van 2008). In addition, he has also had continued success with his freelance work, such as the WWII drama 'Between the Lines’, which premiered at Brixham Theatre in March 2007 to extremely positive reviews and coverage in national magazines. It has since gone on to become FXHome.com's top rated film of all time.

In the winter of 2007-2008, Alex completed two short films, ‘Andrew’ (Busho Short Film Festival 2008) and ‘Canbury’ (Motovun Online 2008, CinemadaMare 2008, CineFest International Festival of Young Filmmakers 2008). In Spring Alex completed yet another film as director, 'Paintbrush' (Finalist SXSWClick 2008), and also another as producer - 'Hidden Light'. More recently, he has continued developing his debut feature, while also completing another short as director: the city-symphony 'Hungerford: Symphony of a London Bridge'.
